Happy May! It is hard to believe that we are starting the month of May! May brings flowers and more sunshine-yay! We are down to the final stretch and just started our most loved unit of the ocean. This week we handed out play parts for The Rainbow Fish.

I don't know about you, but this has felt like a long week! We are all excited it's Friday and can't wait for Family Fun Day tomorrow at Armstrong School! As always, we have been very busy in 1A. We started a new author study this week on Tomie dePaola. He is a first grade favorite because he writes about personal stories from his Italian and Irish heritage and retells folktales with amazing characters like Big Anthony, Strega Nona, Jamie O'Rourke, and many more! Here are some things we did this week...
I hope everyone had a great week off for February Vacation. We had a wonderful first week back and accomplished a lot in 1A. The students started off the week brainstorming good story ideas about events that happened over February vacation. Then, they each choose their favorite idea and wrote a story. Next week we are going to revisit how to use a graphic organizer. Our Queen Bee this week was Riddhisha! Riddhisha made an organized poster that taught us that she wants to be an Art teacher and she is a talented chess and piano player. Animals in Winter
Now that we know that animals survive during the cold, winter months, each student has selected an animal to study. We are using non-fiction texts to help us with our research. First, each student used the photographs to wonder/ask questions on sticky notes. Next, we are trying to use the features of our text to help us answer our questions. We are using an organizer to record our answers and will create a beautiful poster to showcase our new learning. This has been a busy week of fun days and activities! We celebrated the 100th day on February 12th and today was our Valentine's Day celebration. I wasn't even sure if it was ever going to happen with all of the snow days, but we made it to the 100th day of school! The kids had a blast writing about what they will look like and what they will be doing at the ripe age of 100. They created a portrait using KidPix in the computer lab. Today we celebrated Vday and each student brought in a "Party in a Box". It was a huge hit and easy for me! Thank you to all the parents and students for making your box beautiful and creative. We read one of my favorite book, Somebody Love You, Mr. Hatch and then made secret admirer notes to show people we care about them. Now it's vacation time! Have a great week off! Enjoy the snow...more to come! Hello, 1A Families! Due to the short week, this blog will serve as our weekly news update! We only had three days this week, but were able to squeeze in some great learning. Here are a few things you can ask your child about...
