High Frequency-Sight Words
There are 50 first grade high frequency words that your child is expected to master by the end of they year. There are an additional 30 kindergarten words that first graders should own as well. High frequency or sight words are words that appear often in text and often do not follow phonetic spelling rules. Since you cannot sound them out, most children need to practice them frequently in order to memorize them. Your child will be assessed on these words throughout the year. I will only have your child practice the words that he/she needs to own in class. However, I will introduce five new words each week and every student will take these words home to practice letter formation and using correctly in a sentence. Once your child has mastered these works, he/she will practice other words from the Dolch list in class

Phonics & Spelling
To help your child become a strong speller we are using a variety of programs and best practices, as well as whole language. I do not believe that one program works best and work hard to create materials and lessons that meet the needs of all my students and provide opportunities to differentiate instruction. We use features from Fountas & Pinnell, Fundations, and Words Their Way to teach phonics. Your child will learn how to tap out sounds in words, sort words based on spelling patterns, vowel sounds, open and closed syllables, build words with letter tiles, and ultimately apply these skills to their daily spelling.
