Literacy is the backbone to our first grade curriculum. Teaching students to read is a beautiful journey that involves a variety of literacy best practices. Through read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, word study, and other interactive reading activities, students learn a variety of strategies and skills to become life long readers.
The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring our literacy time to allow students time to develop independent habits of reading, writing, and working with words. While students are engaged in a Daily 5 activity, I am able to work with groups or individuals on specific reading, writing, and phonics skills.

Writer's Workshop is a wonderful time during our day when every student is an author. Writer's Workshop allows students to put pencil to paper for an extended period of time to craft personal narratives, opinion pieces, and informational writing. The workshop design allows for a 5-15 minute teacher mini-lesson, 2-5 minute class status check, 20-30 minutes of writing, and 5 minute share.
